The Trip

Step into one of Europe’s last true wildernesses in the middle of winter. From the sustainably designed WeWilder campus on the outskirts of Armeniș, you’ll trek for five days into the snowy Țarcu Mountains in the Carpathians. You’ll learn about the ecology of winter, search for European bison and rediscover what it’s like to live in harmony with nature, accompanied by local Rewilding guides. Rewilding means giving nature the space to restore itself again. In Europe, this is done by bringing back species such as the European bison and reviving natural processes so that landscapes become truly wild and resilient again.

We trek into the mountains on snowshoes, follow tracks of bison and red deer, learn to recognize wildlife signals and see how winter sets the rhythm of the forest. In addition to active treks, there is room to slow down: silence walks, conscious tracking and practice listening to the landscape.

You will also be introduced to local traditions: you will share meals tailored to the seasons, taste traditional Banat flavors and hear how nature tourism and ancient customs contribute to both biodiversity conservation and vibrant communities.

You’ll stay in carefully built tiny houses on the WeWilder campus, designed for sustainability and carried by local involvement, a cozy winter nest after adventurous days outside. Meals are plant-based, seasonal and prepared with local ingredients, from forest tea to hand-baked bread.

This trip is for nature lovers looking for more than just a winter getaway: for anyone looking to reconnect with nature, curious about rewilding, or inspired by the interplay between people and landscape.

No technical experience or snow experience necessary, just good basic fitness and an open, adventurous attitude.

Theme and levels

The theme of this trip is Wild Skills: these trips are for people who want to learn more about wilderness skills. A good basic (running) condition is desirable for this trip. We will walk 15-20km daily with packs and tackle some extra altimeters to a summit. Focus is on nature experience, flora/fauna and less on speed/topping. Experience with (wild) camping or the Wild Human trip is a plus, but not necessary.

Day 2 through 4

Savages in the snow

The days in the snowy Țarcu Mountains are all about living back to basics in the wilderness. We trek on snowshoes through silent mountain forests, learn to read tracks of bison, deer, foxes and wolves and experience the magic of unexpected encounters with wildlife. Along the way, we delve into the ecological role of these animals in the landscape. In addition to the physical treks, there is room for reflection: moments of silence, short solo walks and exercises that allow us to reconnect with the language of nature. We also meet local communities, discover how nature tourism and traditional customs contribute to the conservation of this area, and end the days by the fire with stories, conversations and shared experiences.
