Wild West Mongolia

The Trip
Deeply hidden in the hinterland of Mongolia in the border region with China and Russia near Kazakhstan lies the Altaige Mountains. Far, far away from the civilized and developed part of the country centered mainly around the capital Ulaanbaatar. Wild West Mongolia is a fitting description. The landscape and facilities reflect the definition of inhospitable, which according to the thick dictionary is explained as: “providing no good shelter; desolate, deserted.”
In the Tavan Bogd National Park, we are welcomed by the Kazakh nomadic families, the adelaan hunters. Several times a year, these nomads migrate. We will follow in their footsteps and search for Mongolian game roots. After arriving in Olgi in western Mongolia, we disappear into the mountains. On the road with the nomad caravan, we get a glimpse into their unique way of life and immerse ourselves in the ancient traditions and culture. A time-tested concept virtually unchanged since the heyday of Chenghis Kahn based on adaptability, courage and connection with nature. A journey back in time. Once the territory of this Mongol warlord was the largest empire in the world, five times larger than that of the Romans. In this most unpopulated country in the world, these nomads still live with their herds of yaks, sheep and goats in traditional gers scattered across the vast steppes. With an incredible lack of infrastructure, the horse and camel is still the most common means of transportation here.
Along the way, we climb mountains above 3,000 meters, camp in the wild, visit different nomads and take a look at their unique way of life. Shepherding cattle, eagle hunting and an old-fashioned game of Mongolian wrestling using the steppe as an arena: Chenghis Kahn’s way of cultivating mental and physical toughness. After an adventurous trek in the mountains, we return to the eagle-hunting family, where we conclude the trip with local customs and an overnight stay in a Mongolian ger.
