The Trip

Deep in the Scottish Highlands, hidden between sea, mountains and endless valleys, lies the remote peninsula of Knoydart. Accessible only by boat or on foot and completely devoid of roads, this area constitutes one of the last true wildernesses of Europe. From Fort William, we travel by train and ferry to Inverie, where our adventure begins.

With full packs we trek into the mountains, past deserted glens, rugged mountain passes and quiet lochs. We wild camp in remote places, learn to live to the rhythm of the landscape and experience the raw beauty of Scottish nature. Along the way, we’ll traverse the heart of Knoydart and climb Ladhar Bheinn, one of the country’s most impressive Munros.

After days of hiking, simplicity and living together in the wilderness, we return to Inverie, where we conclude the trek with a final meal together before traveling back to civilization.

Theme and levels

“Wild Skills ” is the theme of this group trip. These trips are for people who want to learn more about wilderness skills. A good level of fitness (for walking) is recommended for this trip. We’ll hike 15–20 km daily with our backpacks and tackle some extra elevation gain on our way to a summit. Experience with (wild) camping or the Wild Human trip is a plus, but not required.

Day 2 through 6

Wild Journey

After an early start, we travel by train to Mallaig and ferry to the remote village of Inverie, accessible only by boat or on foot. Here begins our trek through Knoydart, one of the most pristine areas of Scotland. Along the way, we learn the basics of wild camping, filtering water and living in the rhythm of the landscape. Each day, each new trail, takes us through ancient forests and immense valleys with breathtaking views. We climb one of Scotland’s most inspiring mountains: the Ladhar Bheinn, with unparalleled views when weather permits. At the end of each day, we find a new place to set up camp, our home base for the night. Through a final day of hiking, we return to Inverie, where we conclude our trip with a shared meal and a final evening at the edge of the wilderness. The next day we sail back to Mallaig and travel on to Fort William and home – with tired legs and a head full of memories of one of Europe’s most remote areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions about our trips, practicalities or our story? In these frequently asked questions, you’ll find the answers quickly and easily.

Tent

Where will we stay during the trip?

The first night we’ll stay at the Ben Nevis Inn in Fort William, and we’ll spend one night at Knoydart Camping. The other four nights, we’ll camp in the wild at remote locations, such as Loch Nevis, Loch Quoich, and Barrisdale Bothy, and we’ll find a new campsite every day.

What will I learn along the way?

The theme is Wild Skills: you’ll learn the basics of wild camping, how to filter water, and how to live in harmony with the landscape. The Rewild guide will be with you throughout the entire trek, with 24/7 backup from the Netherlands.

What about food during the hike?

All meals during the hike are included. Only the final dinner, at The Old Forge Pub in Inverie, is at your own expense.

Can I travel to Scotland with my ID card?

No. Since Brexit, an ID card is no longer valid for entry into the United Kingdom; you need a valid passport.

Can I join even if I have never hiked in the mountains before? Or have a fear of heights?

Yes! You don’t have to be an experienced hiker to join us. The trail is challenging, but we walk at a leisurely pace and adjust the program as needed. Fear of heights is not a problem: most routes are safe and you don’t have to climb steep cliffs. The most important thing is curiosity and sense of adventure – the rest we will learn together along the way.

What should I bring myself?

The packing list on this page lists exactly what you need to bring yourself. Some of the equipment is available for rent; please indicate this when you book.

How do I get to Knoydart?

Under “Logistics” in the “Practical Information” section on this page, you’ll find our travel advice and information on how local transportation is arranged. We coordinate flight times among ourselves via a WhatsApp group. Prefer not to fly? That’s possible: you can travel by train or boat to Glasgow and from there by train or bus to Fort William. By train, you can get from Amsterdam to Glasgow in a single day; by boat, you’ll depart in the late afternoon and arrive in the morning, after which you’ll continue on to Fort William that same day.

Can I cancel or change my booking?

Yes, cancellation is possible according to our terms and conditions: up to 8 weeks before departure you pay only the deposit, after that increasing costs apply up to 100% just before departure.

Are there any hidden fees or service charges?

No, there are no hidden costs. All unavoidable additional costs are clearly stated in advance in the travel price.

What payment methods do you accept?

You can pay with us easily and safely via iDEAL and Bancontact. It is also possible to pay by bank transfer. All payments go through our secure booking system Bookinglayer.
