The Trip
The Himalayas, infamous and well known to every mountain lover. But less known is the equally majestic adjacent Pakistani Karakoram Mountains. A place where ancient traditions meet pristine nature, deep in the northern Pakistani region of Gilgit-Baltistan. Here, local communities continue their history, a life fully attuned to the inhospitable environment and seasons. A world and culture waiting to be discovered by you. Together with a local, experienced team of mountaineers, we will explore the Wild Roots of Pakistan.
From the starting point in the picturesque village of Passu, we enter the domain of the iconic Batura Glacier and the surrounding Karakoram giants such as Ultar Sar and Batura Sar through shepherd trails. A landscape characterized by towering peaks, vast glaciers and rugged moraines. But this trek not only offers spectacular mountain panoramas of the Karakoram’s characteristic jagged peaks, it also gives you a particularly fascinating insight into the life of one of the most remote and authentic regions of Pakistan and Central Asia. The route takes us past remote, traditional villages and settlements where the locals have lived the same simple way for centuries: herding goats and yaks and practicing crafts to sustain themselves in this overwhelming environment. Here we will meet the shepherds and farming families who will welcome us hospitably.
On the way we rise to 5200 meters to cross the Werthumpas. Here, nature reigns supreme. After days of the raw wilderness of the Karakoram, wandering from camp to camp and sleeping under a sky full of stars, we walk step by step back to civilization. Pakistan, not your everyday experience.

Theme and levels
The theme of this trip is Wild Roots: a journey to a place where nature and culture are inseparable. A good level of fitness is required for this trip and experience in mountainous terrain is desirable. The combination of the duration of the trip, the altitude we reach and other standards we face makes this a serious trip. Experience with (wild) camping or the Wild Human trip is a big plus.

Packing List
Travel Program
Day 1
Travel Day – Arrival in Pakistan
Today we leave for Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. After arriving at Islamabad International Airport, we will stay one night in the city to rest from the flight and prepare for the long journey north.
Day 2 to 3
Travel day to the Karakoram
We continue traveling by domestic flight towards the mountainous north of Pakistan. This is followed by a car ride to Hunza valley, where we further prepare for the trek. Here we meet the local crew, load the final equipment and set up our gear. We keep an extra day available in case no domestic flight goes and we have to travel overland to the North. If everything goes smoothly we will leave earlier into the area or visit the Karimabad area.
Day 4 to 11
Trekking around Passu cones, the Batura Glacier & over the Werthum Pass
With an open mind and accompanied by our Pakistani guides, we trek into the imposing Hunza Valley. Daily we hike between 5 and 15 kilometers, surrounded by glaciers and high rock faces. The route takes us from the valley past imposing glaciers towards high alpine terrain, climbing further each time. As we get higher, the trails become stonier and steeper, and the landscape increasingly rugged. Via Werthum High Camp, we reach the heart of the Karakoram and cross the pass at 5200 meters. After several days in the wilderness, we slowly return to civilization, full of impressions from this spectacular trip.
Day 12
Back to civilization
We say goodbye to the trekking crew and drive back to Passu or Karimabad. Here enjoy a comfortable night after the past intense days.
Day 13
Travel day within Pakistan
We return from the Hunza Valley to Skardu for the domestic flight to Islamabad.
Day 14
Extra day
Today we either entertain in Islamabad or travel by car to Islamabad if the domestic flight is cancelled.
Day 15
Travel Day – Departure from Pakistan
Today we leave for the Netherlands.
