The Trip
Far behind the great mountain ranges of the Zagros Mountains in Iran, the indigenous Bakhtiari people live a completely traditional nomadic existence. We will go there to experience the authentic nomadic lifestyle, culture and Persian roots with a tribal family and their livestock. In this camping trek on foot, we follow the ancient nomadic paths during the seasonal migration (kooch) through the pristine wilderness of the Bakhtiari hinterland and the unexplored mountains of western Iran.
Different from each other, but together as a big family, we trek into the mountains with the cattle during the kooch, which is typical of nomads. Each family follows the same route each year and they have their own summer pastures to pitch their tents. Those with large herds are the wealthy with more facilities and therefore choose longer migration routes that can last up to six weeks. Since there is nothing along the way, each family carries everything it needs to cover up to two months. The kooch is not a retreat, as the hands go out and we too go old-fashioned physical work. All family members in a nomadic household have chores and responsibilities and so do we. After all, our shelter, food, children and animals do not come up the mountain by themselves. While the young lambs graze in nearby pastures, we walk the mules some 15 to 20 kilometers a day through rivers and snowfields. In addition, we must lead the herd, make bread and meals, and build camp in a different place each day. Minimalist, physically very challenging and immensely satisfying!

Theme and levels
The theme of this trip is Wild Roots: a trip to a place where nature and culture are inseparable. This trip is seriously physical, we hike daily through mountainous terrain and carry a bag with all our own gear on our backs. A good condition is essential and experience with (wild) camping or Wild Human trip is a plus, but not necessary.
Due to migration, dates may change slightly. The program is not completely fixed because we depend on the nomads. Travel in Iran is less streamlined than we are used to in NL. Flexibility is key!

Impact of this trip
This trip is not only an extraordinarily special experience. This is a trip
with a message and a sustainable purpose. With this we create positive
impact and awareness for nature and of course the nomads and local
people in Iran. With this trip you will appreciate the traditions, culture, indigenous
knowledge and lifestyle of the nomads in harmony with nature full of
hidden wisdom and contribute to the preservation of this Persian
heritage and a better economic perspective for the local people in
Iran. Indeed, in the last 100 years, Iran’s nomadic population
has shrunk from 50% to only 1-2%. We eat in a sustainable way
directly from the livestock that has an important function in keeping
the soil healthy in the surrounding nature

Travel Program
Day 1 to 2
Travel Days
We travel to Iran as a group and stay overnight in Esfahan.
Day 3
Introduction and start of nomadic migration
An early morning flight or overnight bus will take us to Ahvaz, where we will do final shopping at the market. Today begins our hike of about 3 to 4 hours to reach the nomads in the Zagros Mountains and join the migration. In the evening under a starry sky we enjoy a hot meal together, camp in the nomads’ cozy tent camp.
Day 4 through 8
Migration Trip
During these days we accompany the nomads in their migration and hike a minimum of 50 kilometers with a lot of altimeters. Seriously physically challenging and immensely satisfying. Flexibility is a key word because there is no set plan due to the nomads’ free lifestyle. As we walk behind the herd in the mountainous regions of Zagros, we enjoy the scenic area on foot surrounded by imposing mountains, oak trees and the sound of sheep bells in the background. In the afternoon, after the nomads stop moving and we set up camp, we enjoy the scenery even more but more importantly the nomadic life outside. At night, a cool sleep under the stars in lower mountain temperatures is quite pleasant.
Day 9
Back to civilization
We bid farewell to our host family and hike our way back to civilization where we will be picked up to travel back to Esfahan.
Day 10
Esfahan
We conclude our trip with a day in Esfahan and a visit to the hammam.
Day 11
Travel day to the Netherlands or start optional extension
Today is devoted to the return trip to the Netherlands. With sufficient enthusiasm (five people) there is the possibility to extend the trip after the nomad tour with a five-day desert trip. In that case we will leave after an evening in the Armenian quarter in Esfahan by night bus to Tabas.
Day 12
Tabas and Esfahak
We will visit a hot spring in the desert (Dige rostam), have lunch in desert drop Esfahak and spend the night in Nayband, an oasis in the heart of the desert.
Day 13
Kal Jeni and Azmighan
Today we will trek around the desert canyon of Kal Jeni. We will sleep in the amazing desert village of Azmighan.
Day 14 to 15
Trekking in the Mesr desert
Hiking, camping and stargazing in the desert! Then on to the town of Yazd for a real Aladdin experience.
Day 16
Yazd and travel day
After all the highlights of this crazy city, we travel back to Esfahan for a late flight back to the Netherlands.
