The Trip

In many ways, the High Atlas in Morocco feels as if little has changed over the centuries. In this mountain range, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean in western Morocco to the Algerian border in the east, a traditional existence is lived by the original inhabitants: the Berbers. Far removed from crowded Morocco, they have preserved their time-honored culture, language and simple life close to nature.

For a week we will explore the wild roots of Morocco and participate in traditional life on the mountain. Accompanied entirely in Berber style by local mountain people, shepherds, their mules and equipped with our own basecamp, we will explore the High Atlas. We use the primary means of Berber transportation and explore the area on foot.

Trekking along paths that locals have been hiking for thousands of years, we climb the roof of North Africa above 4000 meters and are treated to impressive nature and extraordinary landscapes. Along the way, we visit local mountain villages, eat clean tagines and experience the hospitality and culture of this region. Houses made of clay that seem to grow out of the rolling countryside, children playing in a river, the local shepherd wandering the main street with his flock in tow… sipping on a mint tea taking it all in, it is hard not to be charmed by this off-the-grid lifestyle.

Theme and levels

The theme of this trip is Wild Roots: a journey to a place where nature and culture are inseparable. For this trip a good condition and experience in mountainous terrain is required. We walk long distances and sometimes cover 1500 meters altitude per day. This combined with warm temperatures during the day and the altitude of our route (above 4000 meters) makes the trip physically challenging faster. Experience with (wild) camping or Wild Human is a plus but not necessary.

Day 1

Travel day to the Atlas

After our plane ride to Marrakech and onward travel to the Atlas, we are introduced to Berber life in the Moroccan hinterland.

Day 2 through 6

Wandering through the Atlas Mountains

For a week we roam right through the Toubkal National Park berber region. Self-sufficient with our own tent camp and as a team accompanied by local shepherds, mules and guide, we trek through the mountains, walking between 10 and 20 km daily with the necessary altimeters (6-12 hours). We camp in the wild, sleep with local mountain people in guesthouses and feast on local Moroccan mountain cuisine. On our route is the highest mountain range in North Africa. Mules carry our food and basecamp, allowing us to lightly pack and maneuver our day trips.
