The Trip

When you think of Bulgaria you may not immediately think of rugged mountains, but we do! Because ‘Peaks and ridges’, there are plenty of them in this country. We take you to a hidden playground in this part of Europe. To the Pirin National Park to be exact. An impressive landscape of sharp ridges, emerald lakes and pristine nature. Perfect for an alpine adventure.

Our wild tour of this area begins in the charming town of Bansko, on the edge of the massif. The ideal base from which to get in the mood for the Bulgarian mountain setting: a vibrant mix of old stone mountain hut atmosphere houses in narrow streets where mountain culture immediately meets you. On foot from here we trek into the Park, hunting for the best of Bulgaria. Self-sufficient with our tent camp, we bivouac in nature and fall back on the shelters scattered throughout this playground.

Once at the top we comb the area and climb the Bulgarian peaks & ridges fast and light from our basecamp, such as the Vihren at almost 3000 meters. Armed with mountain guide, climbing gear and focus that is. Because some of these peaks require hand and foot work and exhilarating scrambles on a rope through over traverses!

Hikers in a mountain landscape

Theme and levels

Wild Fitness is the theme of this group trip: the days are intense and physical. This trip requires good fitness as well as previous experience hiking in mountainous terrain. This trip is not suitable for people who are afraid of heights and we recommend practicing bouldering or climbing prior to the trip. We will walk daily for 7-10 hours through the mountains with the necessary altimeters towards the peaks, sometimes with a somewhat heavier bag. The altimeters can reach up to more than 1500. Experience with (wild) camping and Wild Human is a big plus.

Day 2 through 7

Camping trek in the Pirin Mountains

After a short transfer to the Gotse Delchev hut, we start our trek and hike to the higher Bezbog hut, where we set up camp on the quiet Bezbog Lake. In the afternoon we explore the surrounding peaks in Fast & Light style: a perfect introduction to the rugged granite and clear lakes of the Pirin Massif. From Bezbog, we continue along rocky trails and turquoise mountain lakes to Popovo Lake and the lofty Tevno Ezero, where we wildcamp for two nights and take a light day hike to the remote Kornichki hut. Then we move west toward Vihrenbasecamp, with the chance to take in additional peaks along the way if the weather holds. The absolute highlight follows with the ascent of Vihren via the airy Djamtziev ridge and the traverse over the iconic Konchetograat. We conclude with a night in the spartan and unforgettable Koncheto bivouac, high above the valleys of Pirin.
