Munro Bagging Scotland Winter Edition

Travel Stories

group looking at the sun with snow

Braving Scottish munros in winter. Armed with crampons, pickaxes and the mountain leaders. Wild, raw, spartan and challenging. The enchanting landscapes, the wilderness areas, the raw and authentic mountaineering and climbing culture – it makes winter climbing in the Scottish Highlands unique. Clearly not your everyday experience.

Scotland has 282 Munros (peaks higher than 3,000 feet), all of which can be climbed. We set out to “bag” some winter Munro’s. Through all weathers, we might add. Our stay during this adventure: a Scottish cabin in the wilderness. Simple, but you don’t get more atmospheric and cozy. Rewilding at its best!

Scotland wouldn’t be Scotland if we weren’t challenged by a little breeze between climbs.

The Scottish Highlands, where your nose is always cold and your gear is constantly soaking wet. Where the wind relentlessly tries to blow you off the mountain and where the sky, the ground and everything in between is one shade of white. But when the rain stops, the wind dies down and the clouds break open for a minute, the views more than make up for all these hardships.

Rise and shine rewilders!

Today we are doing part of the Ring of Steall, a Scottish classic. Fine weathering here in the Highlands.

Basecamp Munro Bagging

A tough heroic day battling across the CMD Arête to Ben Nevis. Wet and cold to the bone, hard lived by all.
