Mountain Leader
Do you seek adventure in the rugged hills and mountains, where trails are sometimes nothing more than a suggestion? Then the Mountain Leader is the expert you need. This certification is the standard for guides who take groups into the wilder, inhospitable mountain areas of Great Britain, Ireland and elsewhere. An ML guide has the technical skills and stamina to guide you safely through technical terrain far from civilization.
What is a Mountain Leader?
A Mountain Leader (ML) is a subject matter expert in mountain navigation and camp management. Where an average hiker stops when visibility disappears or the terrain becomes steep, the ML guide shifts up a gear. They master the art of “micro-navigating” on the square and know exactly how to make a safe crossing through a churning mountain stream. This is a guide who lives for the elements and is only really in his element when the map and compass are the only signposts. For those who want to go a step further and conquer mountains in all four seasons, this certification provides the foundation for the International Mountain Leader (IML), extending expertise to winter expeditions and international high mountains.
Why Rewild chooses Mountain Leaders
At Rewild, we believe that true freedom comes when you can rely on the expertise of your guide. We choose Mountain Leaders because they are the kings of inhospitable terrain. Their training is deeply rooted in the tradition of British mountaineering, where the weather is fickle and navigation merciless.
For Rewild, the ML guide is the perfect partner for our expeditions in the Highlands, rugged coastal areas and European low mountain ranges. They understand our philosophy of self-reliance and improvisation like no other. By working with Mountain Leaders, we can guarantee that you will experience the wilderness in all its purity, backed by a rock-solid foundation of safety and professionalism.
Why this certificate will make a difference for you
Mountains demand respect and knowledge. A guide with Mountain Leader certification ensures that that challenge becomes an unforgettable experience rather than a survival trip.
- Masters of Navigation: Whether we are in dense fog on a plateau or need to find our way through a maze of rocks; your guide knows unerringly where we are.
- Wild Camping Like a Pro: An ML teaches you the intricacies of camp management. From choosing the best spot against the wind to cooking efficiently outdoors.
- Safely Through Rough Terrain: In steep or slippery terrain, a Mountain Leader knows exactly how to get the group down (or up) safely, using the rope for extra security if necessary.
What does a guide learn during ML training?
Obtaining the Mountain Leader badge is a process of years. Guides must submit an extensive log of trips before they are allowed to begin the leaden exams at all:
- Night navigation: The ability to find exact points in the mountains in absolute darkness and bad weather.
- River Crossings: The technique and understanding to safely cross water streams in the wilderness.
- Group management: Keeping calm and motivating the group when conditions get tough.
- Nature Awareness: Deep knowledge of the fragile mountain ecosystems and how we interact with them as guests (Leave No Trace).
